John Newkirk, one of the oldest and one of the best known men of the vicinity of Wallace died Tuesday at 9, at the old home near Lutheran Church. Uncle John, as he has been known for many years, was a remarkable character and few of his generation ? him. H e was a man with a mechnical turn of mind and doubtfully had he been of this generation wtih facilities for development we now he doubtless would have become a success. John W. Newkirk, son of John W. and Susan Fruits Newkirk, was born in Butler Co, Ohio May 6, 1828; he was 88 years and 3 days old at his death. When on ly 3 his parents moved from Ohio to Ripley Township, this county where they resided one year, then moved to Jackson Township, Fountain County. He grew to manhood and and was married to Elizabeth Bowman. To this union 5 children were born, 3 sons and two daughters. One son, George died many years ago at the age of 21 years and David, another son, passed away 11 years ago. Uncle John united with the Lutheran Church located near here more than 60 years ago and continued a member of the same until his death. 50 years ago he united with the Masonic Lodge at Alamo and some years later when the one was organized at Wallace he became one of the charter members of the Masonic lodge at that place, and was a loyal supporter of the craft to the day of his death. For more than a four score years he had lived in that community a life quiet and unpretentious; clean in habits, loyal to family and friends, and always a well wisher to ? men; strictly honest in all his doings. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters, Mrs. Anna Ward of Alamo and Mrs. Rebecca Halett who has made her home with her father for many years and one son, Joseph, living in the old home. There are also a brother, two half brothers, two sisters, 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. ? Thursday at 11 o'clock at the ? the Wallace Masonic lodge in charge of the service ...
